CIAO A TUTTI E BENVENUTI A PALERMO!!!!
First of all, congratulations for your exchange, and welcome to our city. We
really hope you will enjoy staying here as much as we enjoy receiving you all.
How We said to someone of you in the last days, all the LEO Staff is working
to let you to spend a great time here in Sicily next August.
We are now close to the start of Palermo 2006 clerkship.
Here’s some info for you:
1. Hospital, Lodging and Meals
We’ll stay at the “PENSIONATO UNIVERSITARIO SANTI ROMANO” ,
Viale delle Scienze, Edificio 1 - 90128 Palermo (save this
address), situated quite close to the Hospital “P. Giaccone”, where you’ll do
your medical practice. You will go to the hospital from Monday to Friday, in the
morning, and you have to bring your own white coat and stethoscope or the green
coat for surgery department.
Your rooms are available from 1st to 28th August (28th
night is not included), so if you’ll come before or leave later you have to find
a hotel or a hostel where you could stay, asking us in advance could make us in
the way to help you to find a place (don’t call us on 29 of July for the same
night!!).
There are single and double room and you’ll have common bathrooms per floor.
There is not air condition…so you can take with you a fan or you could buy a
cheap one here, in a shop in front of the Pensionato.
Don't bring sheets for your bed, we'll provide for them, bring, instead,
your own towels. You can't bring with you: weapons, animals, boy/girlfriend,
friends, brothers, sisters, grandpa, grandma and the rest of the family...;-)))
At the University Canteen of the Student Housing you will receive a meal each
day (of course Italian cooking…), 7 days a week. No breakfast is included.
Inside the Student Hostel you can use also the Internet Classroom with 20
computers. The connection is free, of course. We’re working for wireless
connection but we’re not sure about it...
2. Social Program!!!
It doesn’t exist a normal clerkship here in Palermo, but just HAPPY CLERKSHIP
FOR HAPPY PEOPLE!!!!
During weeks that we spend together, we’ll try to show you our beautiful land
and how much Sicilian people are nice!!!
Palermo is the biggest city of Sicily and the 5th in Italy. Here
you will be able to have your medical clerkship with a lot of fun too. Palermo
has many beaches, rocky and sandy. You can visit this site:
http://www.comune.palermo.it/siti_esteri/english/index_inglese.htm
We organized parties, disco nights, and some tours in beautiful places of
Sicily like Cefalů, Sciacca, Marsala, Agrigento… We also organize “national
parties”, with typical food, music and drink, for this reason take with you
something typical from your country (alcohol, food and music are the best
for this kind of things!)
Don’t worry: music, wine (this is the land of wine!) and parties will be with
us all the time ;-)
We are organizing an amazing social program, and we ask your cooperation,
hoping you will be understanding if not everything will be perfect, but don’t
forget we are students like you, not a travel agency J
To participate to the social program you should pay a cheap fee for all the
month: when you’ll be here we’ll speak about it again.
3. Weather and what to wear!
Remember that here we are in Sicily and we don’t joke when we call it “the
Land of the Sun”. Temperature in August in very high, especially during the
morning and the afternoon.
4. How to get to Pensionato
For who will come by plane:
Let us know your day and time of arrival and if possible flight number and
from where the plane is coming from (usually Rome or Milan)
From Palermo’s airport you can come to Palermo city by express train. It
costs about 4,50 euros and these are the times of trains: (d = daily; w =
working day; f = festive)
5:32 (d), 5:55 (w) 6:25 (f), 7:40 (d), 8:40 (d), 9:05 (w), 9:40 (d), 9:52
(w), 10:40 (d), 11:40 (d), 11:55 (w), 12:40 (d), 13:40 (d), 14:10 (d), 14:50
(d), 15:40 (d), 16:10 (d), 16:40 (d), 17:40 (d), 18:40 (d), 19:40 (d), 20:10
(d), 20:40 (d), 21:40 (d), 22:10 (d)
As you can see, there’s a train about every hours. The first one is at 5:32
a.m. and the last one is at 10:10 p.m.
You should get off at ORLEANS station (or you will end up at central
station). The train in more or less 40 minutes arrives at ORLEANS station.
Arrived to ORLEANS station you should follow indications to Viale Delle Scienze
exit; in this way you’ll be just few metres far from the pensionato.
You can see the complete timetable at this web site:
http://www.palermoweb.com/trasporti/tranacriaexpress.htm
You can also take the bus from airport (we recommend train), and it
will leave you to the central train station. The price is 4.80 euros and the bus
company name is “Prestěa e Comandč”. There’s a bus every half of hour, from 6.00
a.m. until 12.00 p.m. (midnight)
The bus will stop very close to the Central Trains Station, in a big square
called “Piazza Giulio Cesare”. CONTACT US AT YOUR ARRIVAL, in this way We’ll try
to pick you up.
For who will come by bus or train:
You will arrive always near or inside the Central Train Station. Let us know
your day and time of arrival and CONTACT US WHEN ARRIVED.
Anyway, to reach the Pensionato from the Central Station you should go out
from the main exit of the station in a big square called “Piazza Giulio
Cesare”, turn into a road on the left “Corso Tukory”, go
ahead and at the end of it turn on the right in “Corso Re Ruggero”,
then on the left in “Via Brasa” and you’ll be in front of the gate
of “Viale Delle Scienze” (save this guide lines)
P = Central Station A = Pensionato Universitario Santi Romano
We recommend to have some euros with you before to come or if you can’t have
them, you can change just the necessary at the airport and then in Palermo at
exchange offices or banks (we recommend banks).
We strongly recommend you NOT to take a taxi. Usually it costs
about 50 euros (or more) and we think it’s not a good idea to spend so much
money
For who will come to Palermo by train or bus from other cities (not by plane)
:
we just ask your date, time of arrival and where.
5. For who has a mobile phone
Many mobile phones companies give you the possibility to make phone calls and
send and receive SMS even if you are in Italy. Ask to your mobile companies if
this service is available, and if possible, ask what you have to do when you’ll
be here. It could also be a cheap way to send news at home without spending
money in phone cards and in search of a public phone.
6. Health insurance
As you know, you have to subscribe a health insurance valid for all the
clerkship period. If you must do it yet, you can visit this link:
http://sism.org/sism/htm/insurance.htm
For any other questions please ask and we’ll try to do our best to help
you.
We hope that with your cooperation we could have a great time.
